OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University men's volleyball ran its win streak to four matches on Wednesday night, pushing past Widener 3-1.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-12, 20-25 and 25-22.
It was the Middle Atlantic Conference opener for the Mustangs, who improved to 7-4 on the season and 11-0 all time against the Pride (8-5, 1-1 MAC)
Tim Flanagan had 15 kills on the night to go along with three aces.
Elliot De La Torre and
Ryan Thenell had seven kills each. Flanagan had a hitting percentage of .282 (15-4-39) with De La Torre going .278 (7-2-18).
Defensively,
Aidan O'Brien had seven total blocks, six of them solo. Flanagan had ten digs with
Tanner Laukhuff having nine.
Justin Novoa had 35 assists for the Mustangs.
In the first set, with the score knotted at 13, Stevenson pulled away via a service ace from Flanagan and a kill to make the score 17-14.
In the second set, Stevenson never relinquished the lead and went up by as much as 11 at 22-11 on a service ace by
Micah Ernest.
The third set saw the Pride go up 7-2 early and fend off a late Stevenson rally, as the Mustangs got to within four at 22-18 on an attack error. Trailing 23-20, Widener got the last two points of the set to take the fourth set 25-20.
In the fourth and deciding set, Stevenson went on a 5-0 run to take a 19-16 lead as O'Brien had a massive block. From there, Widener would tie the score late but two attack errors gave the Mustangs the match.
Stevenson heads to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, for a tri-match along with Carolina University.
