Mustangs conclude home slate with 7-1 win over Knights

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson Women's Ice Hockey finished their 2023-24 home schedule tonight against Neumann University. The Mustangs played their most dominant game of the year, scoring a season-high seven goals to take game one of the home-and-home series with the Knights. Ten Mustangs recorded points in the outing and four finished the game with two points.

The Mustangs got the scoring started right away with senior Cassie Campbell finding the back of the net just shy of the 18-minute mark of the first period. Assisting her were classmate Emily Brightbill and first year Abby Smith. Senior Gracie Payne scored her first goal of the season in the second half of the period on the Mustangs' power-play, citing assists from first year Carleigh Barwick and sophomore Meghan Croyle.

The Mustangs would have their most productive offensive period of the season in the second, scoring four goals. The spree began with first year Emma DeMan, who scored her third career goal with help from Payne. DeMan is up to eight points on the season while Payne's two points put her at six.

The second goal of the middle period was scored by Croyle, who shot a high wrister from outside the circle after receiving a pass from Campbell. Both Croyle and Campbell finished the game with two points, and they each total ten points this season.

Senior Emily Brightbill was back on the scoresheet in the second, this time in the goal column. Brightbill dangled through multiple Knights after receiving a pass from first year Abby Smith, then skated around the Neumann goaltender to give the Mustangs their fifth overall and second power-play goal. After her goal and assist tonight, Brightbill stands at seven points on four goals and three assists.

Sophomore Maggie Dean would score the Mustangs' sixth goal with help from senior Franki Cappello for their final goal of the period. Dean's net-crashing goal was her third of the season and Cappello's assist was her eighth. Cappello leads the Mustangs this season with 12 points.

Stevenson's final goal came from Smith and accounts for the second of her career. She was assisted by senior Katelyn Reid and sophomore Natasha Neelon for their fifth and second points of the season, respectively. After tonight's two-point effort, Smith boasts seven overall.

In the circle, Campbell won 15 draws followed by Dean with 10 wins.

In net, sophomore Mallory Hunt picked up her second win of the season with 27 saves, including a game-high 18 in the second period.

The Mustangs will finish their 2023-24 campaign tomorrow afternoon at Neumann. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. at IceWorks in Aston, Pa.
