WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Stevenson Men's Hockey opened their series with Wilkes yesterday evening at the Toyota Sportsplex. Though ice issues would suspend last night's game at 1-1 early in the third, the Mustangs would finish their business this afternoon to earn the 2-1 conference win.
After a scoreless first period, senior Liam McCanney opened up the scoring on the Colonels' power-play, accounting for his team-leading sixth goal on the season. McCanney was unassisted in the effort.
Wilkes responded shortly after, tying the game before the ice issues caused the remainder of the game to be pushed to Saturday afternoon.
The 17 minutes went scoreless as well, forcing overtime. Stevenson earned a power-play opportunity just 43 seconds into the period, and a mere nine seconds later junior Blake Benson called game. Benson's game-winner was his second of the season and fourth overall.
The Mustangs went 34-30 on face-offs, highlighted by senior Dylan Florit with eight wins and classmate Graeme McCrory and first year Aiden Lindley with seven wins apiece.
In net, junior Ford DeLoss made 25 saves for the win.
The Mustangs round out their series with Wilkes this afternoon.
