WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Stevenson Men's Hockey faced off against No. 12 Wilkes University this evening. After the Mustangs won 2-1 in overtime earlier in the day, the Colonels evened out the series with a 6-4 win of their own in game two.
The Colonels had a productive first period, scoring two goals within six minutes, one of which was on the power-play. The Mustangs responded to cut the goal deficit in half thanks to senior Liam McCanney, who cited an assist from classmate Graeme McCrory.
Wilkes would go on to score three straight goals, once before the end of the first and two to start the second period.
Junior Blake Benson broke Wilkes' goal streak at the halfway point, converting a pass from classmate Jack Karlsson to net his fifth goal of the season. Karlsson's assist puts him at ten points on the season, which is tied for the team lead.
Benson's goal sparked some Mustang momentum as he was followed by McCrory and McCanney once more. Earning assists on McCrory's goal were seniors Dylan Florit and Aidan Graham, while McCanney's second shorthanded goal of the weekend was unassisted.
McCrory and Graham now boast five points apiece while Florit holds seven. McCanney's three-goal series puts him at eight on the year, and he sits atop the Mustang point rankings with ten alongside Karlsson.
Wilkes put a stop to Stevenson's scoring in the third, scoring an insurance goal with under two minutes to go.
Florit won a game-high 12 draws in the circle. Graham and fellow defensemen Jack Meloff and Nick Dineen each contributed two blocks.
In net, junior Ford DeLoss made eight stops before first year Jake Hugessen entered in relief, adding 16 saves.
The loss puts the Mustangs at 6-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in conference. Stevenson returns to play at the Reisterstown Sportsplex on January 10th, 2025 for game one of their MAC series with Neumann University.
