SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Stevenson women's basketball team started off their Puerto Rico Clasico series with a 63-55 win against Alverno College on Wednesday evening.
Alverno opened scoring 14 seconds in and held the Mustangs until 8:15 on the clock when
Stephenae Lawrence netted a layup to get the Mustangs on the board. With a minute remaining,
Nadia Ferguson put up two free-throws up to slot 18 points for Stevenson, as the Mustangs held a 18-8 lead going into the second quarter.
Janiya Ennis opened scoring in the second quarter with a jump shot 11 seconds in. Stevenson continued their offensive push to notch a 42-25 lead heading into half time.
In the third quarter, Alverno opened scoring and kept the Mustangs off the board until
Erin Dixon netted two free-throws a little over three minutes in. Stevenson was able to keep a 25-point lead over Alverno, heading into the final quarter 56-31. In the fourth quarter, Alverno came out strong offensively and cut the Mustangs' lead down to 16 five minutes in. Despite Alverno's efforts, the Mustangs fought back and snagged the 63-50 win.
Tessa Boswell and Dixon led the squad with 13-point evenings while each handed out three assists. Dixon snagged six rebounds, as Boswell grabbed four. Ennis followed with a 12-point night while registering seven rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a block.
Nadia Ferguson put up six points and posted two steals.
Destiny Towns had a huge defensive game for the Mustangs and snagged a career-high of 16 rebounds.
Stevenson will continue their Puerto Rico Clasico series in San Juan as the squad faces Hanover College Friday. The contest is slated to begin at 1 p.m. EST/ 2 p.m. AST.
