Mustangs Down Gallaudet, Towns Slots Double-Double

WINCHESTER, Md. – The Stevenson women's basketball team downed Gallaudet 79-52 on Saturday afternoon in the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament Consolation match. In the contest, Destiny Towns slotted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, as Stephenae Lawrence netted 12 points on the afternoon. 
 
Janie Smith put up the first points of the contest up with a jumper off a fast break 40 seconds in. Stevenson did not hesitate to build a lead against Gallaudet as the Mustangs open a seven-point lead with still 7:36 on the clock in the first quarter. Towns put up a jumper with 2:31 left in the first quarter to push Stevenson to an 18-point lead. Although Gallaudet was able to close the gap to 16 points by the end of the quarter, the Mustangs led 26-10 heading into the second quarter. In the second quarter, Stevenson grew their lead further, as Elia Richardson netted a three-pointer with just over 2 minutes left in the half to make it a 24-point lead. In the last two minutes, the Bison cut the lead down to 19 points, but the Mustangs still held a hefty 48-29 lead.
 
In the third quarter, Stevenson held a continuous lead over Gallaudet throughout the whole quarter, and slotted a 64-44 score heading into the final quarter of the matchup. In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs did not take their foot off the gas, as Towns put a up a layup with just under 6 minutes left to play to slate a 26-point lead at 72-46. Four minutes later, Korai Bowen netted a jumper to grab a game-high 29-point lead for Stevenson. Gallaudet put up a final two points, but Stevenson grabbed the 79-52 win. 
 
Lawrence led the points column with 12 on the evening, while snatching six rebounds, Nadia Ferguson followed behind with 11 points and two assists, as Towns notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while also adding an assist. Richardson put up nine points in the contest with three assists and two rebounds. Emori Jeselskis, Tessa Boswell, and Aliyah Jean-Jacques all slotted eight points on the afternoon.
 
The Mustangs will prepare to host Washington College (Md.) for the team's home opener in Owings Mills Gymnasium on Tuesday. Game time is slotted for 7 p.m.
