OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University men's basketball team shot 66.7 percent in the second half (18-for-27) to rally back from a halftime deficit to defeat Waynesburg 73-62 on Saturday afternoon in the opener for both teams.
Stevenson trailed by five at intermission (28-23) but scored 50 points in the second half en route to the win.
Mason Jones led the Mustangs with 22 points, hitting on 8-of-9 field goals and a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line.
Ronald Ayers netted 16 points with
Cameron Smith scoring 11.
Cameron Sapienza had 11 points off the bench for Stevenson.
Jones and Smith each collected eight rebounds with
Joey Lutz getting four assists. Jones had three steals and two blocks on the afternoon.
Stevenson held a 13-2 edge on offensive rebounds, during that into 21 second chance points.
Trailing by six at 32-26 with 17:56 left in the game, Stevenson went on an 11-0 scoring run to go up 37-26 on a tip in by Jones with 15:18 left.
After Waynesburg tied the score one last time at 37-all, Stevenson took the lead for good at 38-37 on a foul shot by Jones. The lead grew to as much as 16 at 63-47 with 4:21 left as Sapienza hit a three-pointer.
Stevenson will welcome in PSU-Berks, Carlow and Brooklyn on Friday for a weekend tournament. The Mustangs will take on PSU-Berks Friday night at 8 p.m.
