Women’s Basketball Falls Late to Geneva in Season Opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Stevenson women's basketball team fell to Geneva (Pa.) 68-71 due to a last effort comeback in the fourth quarter at the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament.
 
Stephenae Lawrence opened scoring on the evening with a jumper 24 seconds into the contest to put the Mustangs on the board. The first quarter consisted of a constant back and forth duel between both teams, but the Mustangs came out 12-11 heading into the second quarter. In the second quarter, Stevenson opened an eight-point lead over Geneva, as all members on the court put an effort towards 24 points to notch a 36-28 heading into halftime. 
 
Emori Jeselskis put up the first two points of the second half of the contest with a jump shot, followed by a three-pointer with 7:52 to go on the clock in the third quarter. In the third quarter, Geneva closed Stevenson's lead to just four points heading into the fourth quarter with 52-49 on the board. 
 
The fourth quarter was a constant battle on the court, as the Mustangs held onto the lead throughout the whole period. Geneva tied the contest 68-68 with only 1:25 left on the clock, and took the win with a three-pointer with only 48 seconds left in the match up. Despite offensive efforts from Stevenson, Geneva walked with the 71-68 win. 
 
Lawrence and Jeselskis led the points column for Stevenson, netting 13 a piece, and each grabbed an assist. Destiny Towns put up nine points on the evening as Elia Richardson followed with eight. Erin Dixon slotted seven points while dishing out three assists, as Nadia Ferguson put up seven points with two assists.
 
Stevenson will continue play in the the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament hosted by McDaniel College, and will play Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
