Mustangs fall to Morrisville 3-2 in final second

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson Women's Hockey opened their season tonight with a non-conference matchup against SUNY Morrisville. In a battle of the Mustangs, the game's decision came down to the final second in which Morrisville capitalized on a net-front scrum.

The first period was back and forth as Morrisville notched nine shots and Stevenson tallied seven. Only Stevenson would find the back of the net with one of those shots thanks to sophomore Carleigh Barwick, who just beat out the clock with her goal at 19:53. Barwick's first of the season was assisted by classmate Emma DeMan and graduate student Gracie Payne.

The second period started with a Morrisville goal to even the score as they poured on 12 shots on goal throughout the period.

Stevenson would capitalize on a 5-on-3 power-play at the midpoint of the third as Emma DeMan tipped a long shot from Carleigh Barwick, who received a pass from classmate Abby Smith.

Morrisville got a pair of breaks in the match's final minute, scoring at 19:24 and 19:59.7 to come away with the victory.

In addition to her goal and assist, DeMan led the Mustangs in the circle, going 12-for-19. She and Smith also led the Mustangs with three shots apiece, followed by Barwick and classmate Lola Russell with two each.

In net, senior Olivia DeGuire held strong, making nine stops in the first, 11 in the second, and 16 in the third for a total of 36 on the night.

The Mustangs are back in action against Morrisville tomorrow at 2 p.m. before entering MAC play against Alvernia next weekend on the road.
