REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson Men's Hockey rounded out their season-opening series with SUNY Canton this afternoon on home ice. Five different Mustangs would score in the 5-2 victory, giving Stevenson the weekend sweep.
Junior Caden Smith was the first to strike for the Mustangs, scoring his second goal of the season at the halfway point of the first period. Smith got the puck thanks to a stretch pass from first year goaltender Jake Hugessen, who earned an assist in the process.
The rest of the first period went goalless, but senior Aidan Graham teed up from the blue line in the second, citing assists from sophomore D-partner Jack Meloff and senior Liam McCanney. McCanney's assist accounted for his 87th career point, tying him for the all-time record.
Canton did not let Graham's goal go unanswered, however, as the Roos scored just 38 seconds later. The Roos would knot the game at two in the first half of the third period on the power-play, but it took Stevenson only nine seconds to regain the lead.
Junior Connor MacDonell notched his first goal of the season and first year Aidan O'Connell was credited with his first career assist on the play. Minutes later, junior defenseman Jack Karlsson scored his second goal of the weekend on the power-play while senior Dylan Florit collected his second assist and junior John Musella earned his first.
Sophomore Matt Yeager capped off the Mustang victory with an empty netter. Karlsson earned his team-leading fourth point on the weekend with the assist.
In addition to his first collegiate point, netminder Jake Hugessen earned his first career victory with his 29 saves. Hugessen made ten stops in the second period and 12 in the third.
In the circle, senior Graeme McCrory won a team-best 11 draws. Junior Blake Benson followed with seven face-off wins.
The No. 15 Mustangs emerge from opening weekend 2-0. Their next contests are against MAC opponent Alvernia University on Friday and Saturday, November 8th and 9th at the Reisterstown Sportsplex.
