WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Middle Atlantic Conference champion King's scored with 8:42 left in the fourth quarter as the Monarchs (9-1, 9-0 MAC) held off Stevenson (5-5, 5-4 MAC) 33-21 in football action Saturday.
With the loss, coupled with Eastern's win over FDU-Florham, Stevenson was eliminated from MAC-Centennial Bowl contention. The Mustangs will have to wait to see if they are selected for an ECAC Bowl on Monday.
Stevenson had a 27-21 lead with 13:41 left in the game as
Jordan Adams threw a nine-yard pass to
Makhi Walker, before King's rallied to take the lead.
Stevenson held pace with the Monarchs, totaling 310 yards of total offense on the day and 199 on the ground.
Kirk Reed rushed for 171 yards on 26 attempts and one touchdown, while
Nyaire Wilson threw for 102 yards and a score.
Deion Richardson caught three passes for 57 yards and a score, while Dillion Johnson caught four passes for 28 yards.
Clarence Travis had a team-high 12 stops, while
Bryan Kelly added in eight.
Gavin Shields had two sacks on the day.
Stevenson played ball control in the first quarter, taking their first drive and going 87 yards in 17 plays over a span of 8:06, finishing with a 9-yard pass from Wilson to Richardson and a 7-0 Mustang lead.
King's tied the score at 7-all, as Russell Minor-Shaw threw a 33-yard pass to Tony Brinson with 9:47 left in the second. Stevenson would answer back with an 11-play, 76-yard drive over 5:32 ending with a Reed 15-yard score and a 14-7 lead.
King's would cut the deficit to 14-13 on a run by Minor-Shaw but the PAT was missed with 2:28 left until halftime.
In the third, King's would take a 19-14 lead with 9:47 left as Minor-Shaw threw a 59-yard pass to Kival Clarke. After Stevenson took the lead, Minor-Shaw ran from 4-yards out with 8:42 left for a 26-21 lead, followed by another Minor-Shaw to Clarke scoring pass, this time from 40 yards out to account for the final margin.
