Mustang Men’s Hockey opens season with 4-3 win over Canton

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson Men's Hockey opened their season tonight with a non-conference matchup against SUNY Canton. Though the Kangaroos would get on the board first, the Mustangs would battle back in the second and third periods to come away with a 4-3 victory.

Canton struck near the halfway point of the first period, and it would be the lone goal of the opening 20. Both teams were productive offensively as each ended the period with 13 shots on goal.

Junior newcomer Caden Smith was quick to obtain the equalizer in the second, doing so less than two minutes into the period. He was assisted by junior Blake Benson as well as first year Greg Spitznagel.

Canton regained their lead shortly after, but senior Liam McCanney erased the deficit a mere 44 seconds later. McCanney was assisted by classmates Dylan Florit and Nick Dineen.

Junior Aidan McDowell was responsible for giving Stevenson their first lead of the game as he scored the Mustangs' third goal of the period with just minutes remaining. McDowell's goal came via junior Jack Karlsson as well as first year Aiden Lindley.

Karlsson opened the final period with what would become the game-winning goal, picking up his second point of the night alongside assisters Blake Benson and Aidan McDowell.

Canton scored a power-play goal at the seven minute mark, but Stevenson held strong defensively to maintain the lead.

Junior netminder Ford DeLoss made a career-high 32 stops in the win, including several saves in the game's final minutes. He made 12 stops in the first and ten in each of the following periods.

In the circle, Caden Smith went 9 for 12 and classmate John Musella won a game-high 13 draws.

Smith also aided the Mustang defense with a team-high three blocks, followed by first year Jack Costabile with two.

Stevenson rounds out their series with Canton tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
