YORK, Pa. - Stevenson Field Hockey opened MAC Commonwealth play this afternoon at eighth-ranked York College. A scoreless 80 minutes of play would force a penalty shootout, and Stevenson was able to secure the 1-0 upset.
Regulation and overtime were a battle between goalkeepers, with sophomore Jordan Vradenburgh making all six saves and York's Belle Fields making eight.Â
Stevenson finished with 11 shots, led by graduate student Emma Gladstein with five. The Mustangs and Spartans were neck and neck in penalty corners with 12 and 13 respectively.Â
Vradenburgh finished the first half with three saves, adding another three in the two overtime periods.
First year Ollie Winterle entered for the shootout, stopping all four York attempts. Graduate student Emma Gladstein scored the Mustangs' first goal to clinch the win, then first year Coco Wallace would score an insurance goal to finally end the marathon match.
The victory marks Stevenson's first over York since the 2015 season, and their first over a ranked opponent this season. The Mustangs improve to 10-2-1 overall with a 1-0 head start in conference play.Â
Their next matchup is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16 on the East Campus when they host MACC opponent Hood College at 6 p.m.
