OWINGS MILLS, Md. – In a key MAC Commonwealth matchup, Messiah took a 3-1 decision over the Stevenson University women's volleyball team on Wednesday night.
Set scores went 25-19, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-19 in favor of the Falcons (11-5, 2-0 Commonwealth).
For Stevenson (8-7, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth),
Zakara Masibo led the way with 12 kills, with
Kylie DesLauriers collecting 11. Masibo also had a strong game at the net, getting four blocks. She hit .321 in the match (12-3-28)
Makala Thompson had 27 assists, while
Nicolette Fuglestad had 17 digs defensively. DesLauriers had 16 digs, with Thompson adding in 15.
Messiah took a lead in the first set 11-6, going on a 5-0 run. For the rest of the way, Stevenson could only get within three several times.
Set two saw Stevenson go up 6-1, before Messiah went on a 7-0 to go up 8-6. The Mustangs and the Falcons traded leads throughout the set, before Stevenson scored the final four points of the set. Trailing 22-21, DesLauriers and Masibo had kills and the Mustangs took advantage of two Falcon attack errors to win 25-21.
After Messiah won set three, Stevenson took a 9-5 lead in set four as
Rachel Lenz had a kill during the small run. Leading 19-15, Stevenson saw Messiah score the final ten points of the set to take the match.
The Mustangs will host Drew and Lebanon Valley on Saturday starting at 2 p.m.
