Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. – Stevenson University's
Ronald Ayers poured in a game-high 28 points, including a 5-for-7 three-point performance as the Mustangs (8-10, 2-5 MAC Commonwealth) bested Messiah (4-14, 0-7 MAC Commonwealth) 89-84 in overtime Wednesday night.
The Mustangs got 17 points from
Joey Lutz, while
Rasheed Cooley and
Cameron Smith each had 15 in the win as Stevenson rallied from nine down in the second half.
For Messiah, the Falcons got 25 points from Bryce Coletti and 24 points from Caleb Lyles.
Down 52-43 with 16:12 in regulation, Stevenson went on a 15-0 run on a span of just under five minutes to take a 57-52 lead with 11:26 left on a layup by
Cameron Smith. Stevenson would take a 60-55 lead with 9:58 left when Lutz hit a three-pointer.
The Mustangs would have to rally again, this time down four at 65-61, going on a 7-0 scoring jaunt to take a 68-65 lead with 5:50 left on a jumper by Cooley.
Trailing 73-72 with 1:53 left, an Ayers three-pointer with 1:37 left gave Stevenson the lead at 75-73. Messiah would come back down and tie the score at 75-all. From there, both teams would miss a three-pointer to force OT.
In the extra stanza, went on a 6-0 scoring run and never looked back, taking as much as an eight-point lead.
Myles Jackson had eight rebounds in the win, as Stevenson controlled the glass 40-33. The Mustangs shot efficiently in the contest, making 52.4 percent of their shots (33-for-63), including 55.6 percent (15-for-27) in the second half.
The Mustangs begin their second half MAC Commonwealth slate on Saturday, welcoming Widener to Owings Mills.
