Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Stevenson Men's Hockey traveled to Pittsburgh this evening to begin their UCHC series with Chatham University. After the Cougars came back from a two-goal deficit, a Mustang goal at the halfway point of the third period would prove sufficient as Stevenson came away with the 3-2 victory.
The first period remained scoreless, as did most of the second period until sophomore Blake Benson lit the lamp. Benson's seventh goal of the season was assisted by first year Rhett Evjen and senior Zach Bannister for their ninth and 15th points of the season, respectively.
The third period saw the majority of the offensive action, beginning with the Mustangs' second goal courtesy of senior Eric Olson for his second of the season. Kyle Lightfoot earned his fifth point of his junior campaign and classmate Jake Roberts collected his fourth in assisting Olson.
Two quick goals by the Cougars would raise the stakes, but the Mustangs would ultimately capitalize on the power-play halfway through the third. Junior Malcolm Palmer one-timed a pass from Benson, his shot dodging the traffic in front of the net and giving Stevenson the final lead. The goal was Palmer's fourth of the season while Benson's two-point outing increases his team-best point total to 18.
Between the pipes, junior Ty Outen made 30 stops for his 12th victory of the year. In front of Outen, sophomore Aidan McDowell tallied a team-high three blocks while Bannister and Palmer added two apiece.
With their third straight win, the Mustangs improve to 13-4-1 overall and 9-3-1 in the UCHC. They look to extend the streak to four and hit double-digit conference wins tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they finish their series with Chatham.
