OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Delayed one day by Tropical Storm Ophelia, the Stevenson University football team showed no let up as the Mustangs (3-1, 2-1 Middle Atlantic Conference) scored 42 unanswered points in a 49-7 win over Widener (3-1, 2-1 Middle Atlantic Conference) Sunday afternoon.
The Mustangs broke open a 7-all tie in the second quarter and held the Pride scoreless over the final 41:09 of the contest.
Maurice Hammond rushed for 96 yards on 14 attempts and three scores, getting into the end zone on rushes of 52,1 and 14 yards in the contest.
Brody Campbell netted a 32-yard field goal and three PATs, becoming Stevenson's all-time leading scorer in football with 196 points. He broke the record with 4:19 left in the contest, converting on a PAT.
Netting 436 yards of total offense,
Pat Gorman caught eight passes for 126 yards and a score.
Nyaire Wilson threw for 286 yards on 18-for-32 and one score, tossing a 27-yard pass to Gorman for a score in the third quarter.
Defensively, Widener was limited to 227 yards of total offense and just 63 yards on the ground.
Daniel Johnson and
Gavin Shields each had six stops, with Shields netting a sack and a 41-yard interception return for a score in the fourth quarter.
Victor Achoroyne had two sacks and a forced fumble.
Stevenson got the first score of the game at 9:22 in the first quarter as Wilson ran from 3-yards out completing a ten-play, 75-yard drive.
Widener got its lone score of the game as Chase Diehl tossed a 33-yard pass to Isaac Hostetter nine seconds into the second quarter to knot the score at 7-all.
Hammond got his first score of the game on a 52-yard rush just over two minutes later, putting Stevenson up 13-7 with 12:31 left in the second quarter.
Campbell netted a 32-yard field goal with 3:47 left in the quarter to give the Mustangs a 16-7 lead, which was 1-yard run from Hammond with 25 seconds left in the half. The last score was set up by a fumble recovery from
JanMichael Finch at the Pride 3-yard line.
In the second half, Gorman scored on a 27-yard pass from Wilson for a 29-7 lead with 4:47 lefdt in the third. That accounted for the lone score of the third quarter.
Stevenson scored three times in the fourth as Hammond scored from 14-yards out with 11:39 left in the final quarter, followed by Shields interception with 8:45 left in the fourth for a 42-7 lead.
The final score came with 4:19 left as
Makhi Johnson scored on a 7-yard rush.
Stevenson is off for the conference wide bye week, before beginning the first of two trips to the Reading area, by taking on Albright at noon on Saturday, October 7.
