Women's Volleyball drops two tough matches at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – The Stevenson University women's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday afternoon at the Marge Knight Classic hosted by Salisbury University.
 
In the opener, the Mustangs won the first set against William Peace, before the Pacers (2-1) took the next three to win, 3-1.
 
In the nightcap, the Mustangs (1-2) lost a hard fought contest to the host Sea Gulls (3-0) 3-2.
 
Both Rileigh Kimball and Kayla Vaeth were named to the All-Tournament team.

Set scores were 21-25, 29-27, 25-16 and 25-20.
 
For the Mustangs, Kimbell had a match-high 14 kills, with Darian Dildy adding in ten and Kylie DesLauriers getting seven.
 
Haley Hoover had eight blocks and two assists with DesLauriers adding in four blocks of her own.
 
Samantha Simmers had 20 assists, with Makala Thompson getting 19.
 
Defensively, Kimball had 17 digs with DesLauriers getting 12.
 
In the first set, Stevenson battled back after trailing 12-8 to go up 15-13 on a block by Dildy and DesLauriers. The Mustangs would have to rally again after trailing 19-17 before the match was knotted back at 21-all. From there, Stevenson took the final four points of the set, with a kill by Hoover ending the first set at 25-21.
 
In the second set, Stevenson held the lead at various points including at 21-16 on blocks by DesLauiers and Hoover. The Pacers regained the lead at 22-21 before both teams traded the lead.
 
Leading 27-26, Stevenson saw the Pacers get the next three points to win 29-27.
 
In the third set, William Peace took a 7-0 lead and never trailed, with Stevenson only able to get within four the rest of the day.
 
Finally, the fourth set saw the Pacers break open a 17-all tie by scoring six straight points to go up 23-17.

Set scores were 25-23, 16-25, 25-27, 27-25 and 15-11.
 
Kimball had 18 kills for Stevenson, with DesLauriers getting 16 and Dildy getting nine.
Thompson had 25 assists with Simmers getting 20. Vaeth had 33 digs in the nightcap, with Kimball getting 14.
 
In the first set, Stevenson led by as much as six twice before the Sea Gulls raliied from one down to take the final three points of the set.
 
Set two saw Stevenson pull away late, as the Mustangs scored four straight points to go up 24-15 before winning 25-16.
 
In set three, Stevenson trailed 14-6 but eventually pulled back to within one at 23-22 on a service ace by Hoover. Facing two set points, Stevenson fended off set point twice and got a block from Dildy to win 27-25.
 
Set four saw the two squads trade the lead, before Stevenson had a 24-22 lead on an attack error. Trailing 25-24, Salisbury took the last three points of the set to win 27-25.
 
In the fifth and deciding set, Stevenson had an 11-10 lead late before the Sea Gulls took the last five points of the set and the match.
 
Stevenson opens its home slate on Wednesday, taking on Gettysburg.
