OWINGS MILLS, Md. - After nearly a full week without a game, Mustang Field Hockey returned to Owings Mills East for a non-conference contest against Virginia Wesleyan. Stevenson would pull out a 4-3 win late in the game, with senior Emma Gladstein finding the back of the net all four times.
The Marlins struck first near the end of the first quarter, but the Mustangs had just enough time to even the score. Exactly two minutes after Virginia Wesleyan's Druiett scored, Gladstein scored her second goal of the season with under a minute remaining in the first quarter.
Gladstein was back yet again late in the second quarter, converting a feed from sophomore Brenna Benson to get the Mustangs their first lead of the game.
She would complete her natural hat trick at the end of the third quarter, but Virginia Wesleyan found their footing as they scored two straight to knot the game at three in the fourth quarter.
Gladstein and Benson teamed up once more for the go-ahead goal with just under six minutes to spare, and the Mustangs' strong defense was able to ward off any offensive strikes from the Marlins as the clock ran out.
Stevenson fired off 21 shots on goal, lead by Gladstein with seven and classmate Macy Kosanovich trailed with five. Both teams earned considerable penalty corner chances, and senior Meghan Huey recorded three defensive saves in a back-to-back-to-back Marlin corner spree.
In net, first-year Jordan Vradenburgh earned her first collegiate win, making one save as the reliever in the fourth quarter.
Gladstein leads the team in goals (5), assists (5), and points (15) after today's heroics. She leads the MAC Commonwealth in goals , shots on goal (13), assists, and has a six-point edge on the next highest point leader. Huey leads the conference in defensive saves with four after today.Â
The Mustangs have a quick turnaround as they travel to Allentown, Pa. tomorrow for a game with Cedar Crest College, where they look to extend their win streak to four. They return to Owings Mills East on Saturday for a noon matchup with Bridgewater College.
