SALISBURY, Md. – In its opening match of 2023, the Stevenson University women's volleyball team came out swinging in a 3-0 win over Drew at the Marge Knight Classic hosted by Salisbury University.
Set scores were 25-15, 25-13 and 25-18.
The Mustangs hit .265 in the three-set sweep, including 10-1-25 (.360) in the second set and 15-4-35 in set three (.314). Stevenson made just nine errors on the night.
Kylie DesLauriers had a match-high nine kills, while
Rileigh Kimball had eight and
Haley Hoover netted six.
Samantha Simmers had six service aces as the Mustangs had 11 on the night. Kimball and
Makala Thompson had two each.
Simmers had 17 assists, with Thompson getting ten.
Defensively,
Kayla Vaeth had 15 digs with Simmers getting 13 and DesLauriers 12.
Leading 5-1 early in the first set, Stevenson broke open the match on an 8-1 run to go up 16-6 and never looked back.
In set two, the two teams traded leads before Stevenson took the lead for good on an 8-2 scoring run to go up 18-10.
Set three saw the Mustangs go up 9-1, however, they had to fend off a Drew run as the Rangers scored six straight points to get within two at 9-7. The Mustangs did not relinquish the lead and pulled away midway through the set going up 19-12.
Stevenson will take on William Peace and Salisbury on Saturday in Day Two of the Knight Classic.
