Mustangs Snag Comeback Win to Advance to MAC Commonwealth Championship

 
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson men's lacrosse team (11-7 Overall, 8-1 MAC Commonwealth) grabbed a 17-13 comeback win over the Eastern Eagles in the MAC Commonwealth semifinal round on Wednesday evening.

The Mustangs put the first goal away at 12:38 as Dillion Linhardt netted a goal off a ball from Shane Ford. The Eagles then followed with two goals to make it 2-1 Eastern. At 9:05, Ford tied the game at two, with an assist from Jack Scaliti. Eastern then put up three more goals and slotted a 5-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
Cam Leydig started the second quarter with a man-up goal off a feed from Ford 15 seconds in, and 45 seconds later the duo put another goal away to notch the fourth goal for the Mustangs. The Eagles then replied with three more goals, until Ford slotted a goal with 6:24 on the clock off a pass from Robbie Vanderklugt. The Eagles then put one last goal away with just under five minutes remaining, the Mustangs trailed 5-9 heading into halftime.
Grant Zick netted a goal at 13:17 to start off the second half, as Ford put away another less than a minute later. Scaliti then netted the eighth goal for the Mustangs off a pass from Zick. The Eagles responded with a two more goals, but Scaliti notched a ninth goal with 7:09 on the clock. Eastern put up a goal with just under six minutes on the clock, but Zick netted two more goals for the Mustangs to close the game to trail the Eagles 11-12 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs started the fourth quarter with their foot on the gas. Leydig tied up the game at 12 under two minutes in off a feed from Ford, as Ryan Coleman followed 10 seconds later with a goal to take the 13-12 lead. About two minutes later, Ford put away a man-up goal off a pass from Leydig, as D. Linhardt did the same shortly after to grab a 15-12 lead. The Eagles put away a goal with 2:37 on the clock, but then Conor Halpin replied with an unassisted goal ten seconds later. With under a minute remaining, Zick put away one last goal to confirm the 17-13 win for the Mustangs.
 
Ford led the Mustangs with a nine-point game with four goals and five assists, as Leydig followed with a six-point game slit with three goals and assists. Zick put up a five-point game of four goals and an assist. Conor Halpin was strong on the face-offs for the Mustangs in the second half and went 7-11. Ryan Quinn was a strong suit on defense, causing four turnovers and grabbing eight ground balls. Justin Scorese put up nine saves for the Mustangs while in goal.
 
The Mustangs will prepare to travel to No. 1 seeded York College of Pennsylvania for the MAC Commonwealth Championship on Saturday in York, Pa. at 12 p.m. The winner of Saturday's contest will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
