YORK, Pa. – Ninth-ranked York College of Pennsylvania raced out to a 14-2 halftime lead and never looked back as the Spartans (13-3, 7-0 MAC Commonwealth) defeated Stevenson (6-10, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth) in a women's lacrosse game on Wednesday. The game endured a long weather delay.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs clinched a spot in the upcoming playoffs. The Mustangs can clinch a bye into the semifinals with a win over Alvernia on Saturday, coupled with a Widener loss to York. If the Pride defeat York, Stevenson would host a play-in game on Monday against Albright with a win on Saturday.
Back to Wednesday's game, Kellyann Coccia had two goals, with Marisa Massimini, Kara Yarusso and Erin Olenchalk scoring. Yarusso and Hannah Zimmer had assists in the contest.
Sophie Shucosky had six ground balls, as she made five saves in 45 minutes of work. Regan Torbert had three saves in 15 minutes in relief of Shucosky.
Isabelle VanEmburgh had four draw controls with Coccia getting two.
York opened up a 5-0 lead, before Stevenson got goals from Olenchalk and Yarusso back-to-back in the first quarter, with Yarusso scoring at 3:06 to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Coccia would score her goals back-to-back at the 8:17 and 5:34 mark in the third to cut the deficit to 15-4.
Massimini scored with 4:30 left in the game on an assist from Yarusso for the final 17-5 margin.
