Mustangs Score Early, Fall to Messiah Falcons

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson women's lacrosse (5-9, 3-2) fought early, ultimately concluding the conference game in a 12-2 loss to the Messiah Falcons (11-2, 4-1) on Wednesday evening.
 
Sophomore attack/ midfield Kellyann Coccia scored the first goal for the Mustangs within the first 15 seconds of game play. The second and final goal for the Mustangs occurred in the third quarter from junior midfield Kara Yarusso. Senior goalie Sophie Shucosky surpassed SU goalie Kaitlyn Brzozowski's ('08) record, finishing the game with 14 saves and clinching the fifth spot in team history with 409 career saves.
 
FIRST QUARTER
Following Coccia's early game goal, the Mustangs allowed three Messiah goals before an SU attempt off the goal post with 11:15 on the clock. Shucosky made her record-tying save with 9:15 remaining, before surpassing Brzozowski's record with 2:39 on the clock following three more goals from the Falcons. The quarter ended 6-1.
 
SECOND QUARTER
Shucosky denied a pair of attempts early in the second before the Falcons netted a seventh goal. Both first year attack/ midfield Marisa Massimini and sophomore midfield Isabelle VanEmburgh each had an off-target attempt. The Falcons scored one more goal, but the Mustangs denied two more attempts before entering the half down 8-1.
 
THIRD QUARTER
Denying one attempt and allowing a ninth goal, the Mustangs got their final goal from Yarusso with 9:02 remaining. The Falcons hit 10 goals as the Mustangs followed with a denied attempt with 17 seconds remaining before a yellow card was issued or the Falcons. The quarter ended 10-2.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
Defensively, the Mustangs allowed two fourth-quarter goals from the Falcons, while denying six attempts, two of which were credited to sophomore goalie Regan Torbert, who entered the game in the last 30 seconds when Shucosky was issued a yellow card. The Mustangs ended the evening with a final 12-2 decision as the running clock was added in the final three minutes.

The Mustangs travel to Eastern University in conference play on Saturday, Apr. 22, for a 1 p.m. game.
