GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Stevenson men's lacrosse team (8-6 Overall, 5-0 MAC Commonwealth) remains undefeated in MAC Commonwealth play as the squad tallied a 14-9 win over the Messiah Falcons on Tuesday evening.
Messiah was the first to put a goal away in the match up, after the teams dueled back-and-forth for the first three minutes of the contest. The Mustangs then replied with five goals. At 8:09,
Shane Ford put the first goal away for Stevenson off a pass from
Cam Leydig, and less than a minute later the duo followed with another from the same location to make it 2-0. With just under two and a half minutes left in the quarter, Ford put notched a hat trick with an assist from
Jack Scaliti, as
Andrew Searing followed with an unassisted goal.
Brennan McKneely then put away the fifth goal for the Mustangs with about 30 seconds on the clock. The Falcons then snuck one more goal in with three seconds on the board to make it a 5-2 match.
The Mustangs put the first two goals of the second quarter home, as
Josh Brannan netted a goal at 10:46 off a ball from
Ryan Coleman, as Searing followed 40 seconds later with another unassisted goal. Messiah put their third goal away with under nine minutes to go in the half, but Stevenson replied with three more. At 6:44,
Justin Tepper tallied a goal off a pass from
Shane Ford. Three minutes later
Grant Zick followed with an unassisted point, and a minute later Coleman put up a goal off an assist from
Alexander Wilson. The Falcons finished off the quarter with a goal with 1:12 remaining, as the Mustangs led 10-4 going into half time.
In the third quarter, the Falcons shut the Mustangs down to one goal, as Ford put the lone Stevenson goal away at 5:33 off a feed from Scaliti. Messiah tallied two goals in the quarter, but the Mustangs still led the contest 11-6 heading into the fourth.
Cam Leydig notched the first goal of the fourth quarter less than a minute in. The Falcons retaliated with three straight goals to cut the goal differential to three, but the Mustangs came back at them with two more goals. With just about three minutes on the clock, Coleman put away another goal as Zick followed with 32 seconds remaining to finalize the 14-9 decision.
Ford led the Mustangs on attack with a five-point game of four goals and an assist. Coleman, Zick, and Searing each slotted two goals on the evening.
Matt Wilson was a strong suit on defense with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Justin Scorese made nine stops in between the pipes.
The Mustangs will return home to Mustang Stadium to face the Eastern Eagles on Friday evening as the team celebrates their senior class and the 2013 NCAA Championship team. Start of the game is slotted for 7 p.m. and the game will be followed with a post-game firework show.
