FREDERICK, Md. – Stevenson women's lacrosse gained an early lead on the Hood College Blazers, scoring six goals in a row before falling to the home team in the final period, 15-12, on Wednesday evening.
Junior midfield
Kara Yarusso totaled four points and four goals on seven shots. She is one point away from her 100
th career point and 14 goals away from 100 career goals. Sophomore attack/midfield
Kellyann Coccia notched a hat trick with six shots, five on goal. Senior defense
Hanna Ash impressed defensively with three ground balls, one goal, and three caused turnovers.
FIRST QUARTER
With the Blazers on the board first, the score was quickly tied when first year attack/midfield
Marisa Massimini made it 1-1 at two minutes and 15 seconds into game action. The Mustangs scored five more goals in the opening period with two from Yarusso and one each from sophomore attack
Hannah Zimmer, Coccia and Ash. The Blazers scored once more, bringing the score to 6-2 in the first.
SECOND QUARTER
With the Blazers scoring early once more, Coccia added another goal with 7:44 remaining. Both Yarusso and Coccia each went on to add a goal for the Mustangs, while the Blazers totaled four, bringing the score to 9-6 at the half with the Mustangs ahead.
THIRD QUARTER
The Mustangs swiftly hit double digits in the third with a goal from Yarusso, bringing the score to 10-6. With 9:23 remaining, sophomore midfield
Isabelle VanEmburgh scored a goal, followed by
Bailey Krahl, who added one with 6:11 remaining. The Blazers totaled four goals in the third, trailing the Mustangs 12-10 by the end of the third.
FOURTH QUARTER
With 10:42 remaining, the Blazers scored once more before tying the game 12-12 about five minutes later as the Mustangs pushed defensively. Additional Hood offensive attempts resulted in three more goals, as the game ended in the final 15-12 decision in Hood's favor.
