Heuer fans 16 as Softball battles top-ranked Salisbury

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University softball team battled top-ranked Salisbury on Wednesday afternoon at Owings Mills East.

In game one, the Mustangs kept pace with the Seagulls before falling 3-1. In the night cap, Salisbury (28-2) scored early in a 13-2 win over the Mustangs (13-12).

Game one was highlighted by the performance of pitcher Marissa Heuer. In the first inning, she grabbed her 400th career strikeout on her way to a 16 strikeout performance. She allowed just one walk and three earned runs while scattering nine hits.

Salisbury broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning as the Seagulls scored on a RBI ground out, then went up 2-0 in the fifth on a RBI double.

Stevenson scored its lone run in the fifth as Megan Hamp popped up to second base scoring McKenzie Tobler. That would be as close as the Mustangs would get, as Salisbury scored an insurance run in the sixth.

Stevenson finished with nine hits of its own, as Maddie Bosley went 3-for-4, while Jordan Fangman went 2-for-3.

In game two, Salisbury scored five times in the first and seven times in the second in route to a win in five innings.

The two runs came in the bottom of the first for Stevenson, as Hamp hit a double to right scoring Bosley and Tobler. Tobler and Bosley finished game two with two hits each.

Jillian Haines took the loss, walking one and giving up six earned runs in one inning of work.

Stevenson jumps back into conference play on Saturday, heading to Albright.
