Mustangs Fall to Mary Washington Eagles

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson women's lacrosse netted six goals to the Mary Washington Eagles' 11 Wednesday evening at Mustang Stadium.

Sophomore midfield Kellyann Coccia scored two goals on the evening, with four draw controls and five total shots. Sophomore defense Isabelle VanEmburgh had seven shots with four on goal. Sophomore attack Hannah Zimmer scored her second goal of the season while freshman midfield Kayla Hunter added her second career goal.

FIRST QUARTER
The Eagles wasted no time getting points on the board, scoring just over 30 seconds into play. Stevenson's junior midfield Kara Yarusso managed an attempt, but the shot was blocked. Minutes later, the Eagles scored again, and the Mustangs added an attempt from VanEmburgh, but the shot was just wide of target. Following a shot from the Eagles, VanEmburgh scored the Mustangs' first goal of the evening off a free position with just over nine minutes remaining.  The Eagles finished the opening quarter on top 3-1.

SECOND QUARTER
Scoring early once again, the Eagles' fourth goal came at just over two minutes into play. Three minutes later, Hunter added the Mustangs' second goal of the evening. Despite being denied just over a minute later, Yarusso brought the score to 4-3 as the Mustangs closely trailed the Eagles. The gap widened again, however, as the Eagles doubled their score, ending the first half 8-3.

THIRD QUARTER
In a scoreless quarter, the Mustangs quickly denied four attempts in the first minute and a half, adding four saves to Stevenson sophomore goalie Regan Tobert's career record. The Mustangs had one more attempt and Torbert notched two more saves, her first time with more than five saves in one quarter. The score remained 8-3.

FOURTH QUARTER
Coccia brought the Mustangs to four points with a goal just under six minutes into the final period, but the Eagles quickly scored with 8:43 remaining. The Mustangs scored twice more, but ultimately fell to the Eagles in  an 11-6 decision.
