OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson men's lacrosse team took down the Kean Cougars 18-9 on Wednesday evening under the lights in Mustang Stadium with a second half surge on attack.
Shane Ford tallied the first goal of the contest, as the attacker put away a goal for the Mustangs with 10:37 remaining in the first quarter. The Cougars responded with two goals in the following two minutes, but
Jack Scaliti retaliated right back to tie the game at two with a goal at 5:46. Kean came back with a third goal to take the lead, but at 2:37,
Ryan Coleman netted an unassisted goal to tie the game back up.
Cam Leydig then followed with 11 seconds on the clock with a fourth goal for Stevenson to notch a 4-3 lead going into the second quarter.
The Cougars opened scoring in the second quarter with a goal at 13:34, but after a scramble at center field,
Ed Masterson came out on top with the ball to assist a goal from
Mitchell Lachman at 12:03. Three minutes later, the Cougars tied the game 5-5. At 4:54, Leydig put away his second goal of the contest, but Kean responded with a sixth goal to tie the match 6-6 at halftime.
The Mustangs came out hot in the second half with two goals at 14:02 and 13:28 from Coleman. Kean responded with a goal at 12:18, but the Mustangs handed back two more. At 9:41, Ford netted a goal off an assist from
Alexander Wilson, and then put away another goal at 7:15 off a pass from Coleman. Wilson then followed with 2:57 on the clock to fire away his first collegiate goal and make it an 11-7 game. The Cougars put one more goal away with 1:04 in the third quarter, to notch their eighth goal of the match up.
In the fourth quarter, Wilson put away his second goal of the contest at 12:05 to tally the twelfth point for Stevenson. Four minutes later, Leydig took advantage of the man-up opportunity to put away his third goal in the contest off a ball from
Andrew Searing, and after the penalty was released,
Grant Zick netted another goal to slot the 14-8 lead. Coleman and Leydig then each followed with their fourth goals in the game, both with assists from
Josh Brannan. At 4:13, Zick tallied another goal off a ball from Leydig, and a minute later Ford put the final goal away for the Mustangs. Despite efforts from the Cougars and a last-minute goal, Stevenson took the 18-9 victory.
Leydig slotted a six-point game with four goals and two assists, as Coleman and Ford each tallied four goals and an assist. Wilson grabbed a three-point game, as Zick notched two goals.
Ryan Quinn and
Jack McKenna led the caused turnover column on defense with three on the evening.
Justin Bordner dominated face offs against the Cougars, winning 18-26.
Justin Scorese and
Kai Dimaculangan stood in goal for a combination of 14 saves.
The Mustangs will prepare to travel to Annville, Pa. to face Lebanon Valley College in their first MAC Commonwealth contest of the season. The matchup is slotted for 1 p.m.
