Softball sweeps past Hood to move to 4-0 in Commonwealth play

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University softball team swept its way to a 4-0 mark in the Commonwealth Conference on Sunday, via two wins over Hood.

In the first game, the Mustangs defeated the Blazers 8-0 in five innings, while in game two Stevenson (11-4, 4-0 MAC Commonwealth) rallied past Hood (7-11, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth) 11-6.

Game One
Stevenson put the game out of reach by taking a 7-0 lead after two innings. The Mustangs banged out nine hits with senior Jordan Fangman and graduate student Marisa Hamp each collecting two hits. Hamp, Fangman and junior McKenzie Tobler each had two runs scored with Fangman, Hamp and graduate student Marissa Heuer each having two RBI.

Heuer went the distance in the circle, improving to 6-2. She struck out three, walked one and scattered three hits.

Hood struck four times in the bottom of the first, with Heuer hitting a two-run triple that cored Hamp and Fangman. Heuer would later score on an RBI triple by graduate student Jillian Haines. Haines would then score on a RBI single by sophomore Rebecca Henry.

In the second, the lead ballooned to 7-0 as Fangman doubled home Tobler, followed by a two-run home run from Hamp.

The eighth run came from Fangman, as he doubled home Tobler in the fourth.

Game Two
The Mustangs fell behind 2-0 after the top of the second inning, before taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the frame as Heuer had a RBI single that scored Hamp, followed by a sacrifice fly that scored Heuer via an out from Maddie Buher.

A RBI triple from senior Kat Perea scored Henry for the 3-2 lead.

In the third, Hood took a 6-2 lead before Stevenson tied the score again at 6-all as Heuer had a RBI double followed by a two-run single from Henry.

Stevenson took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth as Heuer had a run scoring single followed by a sac fly from Buher.

In the fifth, the Mustangs went up 9-6 as Fangman singled to left scoring junior Maddie Bosley. Stevenson packed on two more runs in the sixth as sophomore Elizabeth Russo had a two-run single that scored Henry and Heuer.

Freshman Ky Vaughn got the win in relief of senior Jenna Sadowski. Vaughn pitched two innings of three hit ball, striking out two and walking one. Heuer got the save, as she went 2.1 innings of no-hit ball with three strikeouts and one walk.

Stevenson hits the road and goes to Randolph-Macon on Tuesday.
