FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Stevenson University softball team, playing the first of four doubleheaders over the next five days, split a pair of games with The University of Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon.
In game one, the Eagles plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2, while the Mustangs (9-4) handed the Mary Washington (12-6) a 4-3 loss in nine innings in the nightcap.
Game One
After Mary Washington took a 1-0 lead after the first, Stevenson battled back with two runs in the top of the third as McKenzie Tobler singled home Kat Perea, while Tobler would later score on an RBI single by Maddie Bosley.
Mary Washington would score all four runs in the bottom of the fourth, all coming with two outs. One run came on a bases-loaded walk with Aminah Shakir had a two-run single for UMW.
Stevenson loaded the bases in the sixth, but, could not get a run across.
Jillian Haines took the loss, falling to 3-1. She allowed just one run, walking three. Jenna Sadowski allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.
Tobler finished 3-for-4, with seven Mustangs collecting hits.
Game Two
Stevenson went right to work in the first inning as Bosley singled to right, scoring Tobler. Mary Washington would tie the score in the third as Bridget Laychak singled to right.
Heading into extra innings, Stevenson scored first in the top of the eighth as Megan Hamp's sacrifice fly to right field scored Perea, for a 2-1 Mustang edge. The Eagles would tie the score in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a Mustang error.
In the ninth, Stevenson plated two runs as Elizabeth Russo scored on a RBI single by Rebecca Henry. Rivers Edwards would later score on a bases loaded walk by Bosley.
Those two runs turned out to be important as Mary Washington would score in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Nya Lloyd. However, Marissa Heuer would induce a groundout to end the game.
Heuer went the full nine, upping her record to 5-2. She struck out six, walked one and allowed just one earned run. Bosley and Jordan Fangman collected two hits in the win.
Stevenson will host Gettysburg on Thursday.
