OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson women's lacrosse gained a significant lead in the first half before a late-game tie, leading to an 11-10 loss to the No. 22 ranked St. Lawrence University Saints on Tuesday evening.
Three Mustangs, including first year attack/midfield
Marisa Massimini, sophomore midfield
Isabelle VanEmburgh, and junior midfield
Kara Yarusso netted two goals each. First year defense/midfield
Melina Primrose scored her first career goal on the evening. Massimini also notched five shots, while VanEmburgh totaled three shots and four turnovers. Senior goalie
Sophie Shucosky also doubled the total amount of saves of the Saints by a 12-6 margin.
FIRST QUARTER
The Mustangs scored early, netting the first goal just over two minutes into play by VanEmburgh. Following a denied attempt, the Mustangs scored again with just under eight minutes remaining, from senior attack/ midfield
Erin Olenchalk. The Mustang defense went on to deny two more attempts, giving Shucosky three saves in the first quarter before Stevenson's Yarusso scored with 3:29 remaining. The Mustangs closed out offensively, attempting two more shots more before the quarter closed.
SECOND QUARTER
Following a very early denied attempt, just three minutes into play, sophomore attack
Hannah Zimmer scored her lone goal of the night, making it 4-0 for the Mustangs. Stevenson ended the first half on top, scoring three more times on five more shots.
THIRD QUARTER
The Mustangs had two scoring opportunities in the third, with goals from Massimini and VanEmburgh. The Saints scored six goals despite the Mustangs' two saves. The quarter ended in a close 9-6 scire with the Mustangs still in the lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
Coccia scored the lone goal for the Mustangs in the final period of regulation, with an off-target attempt with just over eight minutes remaining. The Saints collected four goals, tying the game with just over three minutes remaining. The Mustangs remained keen defensively, denying five attempts with the final arriving with just two minutes remaining in regulation. A 10-10 tie forced overtime.
OVERTIME
With the stakes high, the Mustangs kept the defensive pressure on the Saints in a back and forth affair before the visitors scored, resulting in the final 11-10 score.
