Mustangs Conclude Arizona Trip with Second Win, 18-7

MESA, Ariz. – Stevenson women's lacrosse (2-5) wrapped up their second game at Bell Bank Park against the University of Wisconsin – River Falls Falcons (1-3) with an 18-7 decision on March 16, 2023.
 
Sophomore attack/midfield Kellyann Coccia topped the team with a season-high six goals, while sophomore midfield Isabelle VanEmburgh added five, also a season-high accomplishment. Junior midfield Kara Yarusso notched a hat trick, scoring four goals. Senior attack/midfield Erin Olenchalk scored her first career goal in the third quarter. Sophomore attack Hannah Zimmer scored a game-high two goals for her record.
 
FIRST QUARTER
The Mustangs brought early-game energy, scoring the first goal just over two minutes into play. A second goal from VanEmburgh followed just over a minute later. The Falcons attempted to find the back of the net with just under eight minutes left, but senior goalie Sophie Shucosky ultimately denied the attempt. Coccia scored the third goal for the Mustangs just over a minute later. Shucosky tallied three more saves before the Falcons got on the board with just under three minutes into play. The score for the opening period was 3-1.
 
SECOND QUARTER
Following a Shucosky save off an attempt from the Falcons with 12:45 on the clock, the Falcons made it a one-point game about two minutes later. The Mustangs' offense pressed, scoring the fourth goal following a denied attempt from the Falcons. VanEmburgh then scored the fifth goal off a free position with 6:21 remaining. In a back-and-forth quarter, the Falcons added three more goals to end the half while the Mustangs maintained a consistent lead, ending on a 7-5 decision on the half.
 
THIRD QUARTER
Going into the third, the Mustangs made a save seconds into play. Two Stevenson attempts followed, as one was denied by the Falcons off the stick of Yarusso. Sophomore goalie Regan Tobert made another save before VanEmburgh scored the eighth goal for the Mustangs with just over 10 minutes remaining. The Mustangs added five more goals, mounting a significant lead as the Falcons managed one goal to end the third. The score was 13-6.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
The Mustangs started the final quarter hot, scoring three goals in a three-minute span, kicking in the mercy rule. Yarusso scored twice more in the quarter while the Falcons added one more goal with just over five minutes remaining. With four saves in the final quarter, the Mustangs finished victorious with the 18-7 decision.
 
NUMBERS AND NOTES
  • All four goalies made an appearance, and each added saves. Shucosky played the first half, totaling seven saves, while Torbert played the third quarter and the first portion of the fourth. She added three saves. Freshman Anna Johnston stepped in for three minutes of play in the final quarter, totaling two saves. Junior Caitlyn Lane made a save with two seconds remaining, her first save this season.
  • The team scored six goals in the third quarter, gaining a significant lead as the half continued.
  • Bailey Krahl notched a career-high five assists.
  • Yarusso made a season-high eight shots.
  • VanEmburgh also made a season-high six shots on goal.

The Mustangs return home for a game on Tuesday, Mar. 21 against St. Lawrence University at 7 p.m. in Mustang Stadium.
