OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson (1-2) men's lacrosse team slotted their first win of the season with a 14-3 victory over the Catholic University Cardinals on Wednesday evening.
The Mustangs opened scoring at 13:51 in the contest with an unassisted goal from
Jack Scaliti. At 13:04, Catholic responded with a man-down goal to tie the contest 1-1. For the rest of the first quarter the Mustangs surged on attack. At 10:57,
Josh Brannan netted his first goal of the match up off a pass from
Grant Zick.
Ryan Coleman followed with an unassisted goal at 9:35 to grow the lead 4-2. With 7:23 remaining in the first quarter,
Shane Ford tallied his first goal of the game. Brannan then slotted another goal with 39 seconds remaining in the quarter to cap off a 5-1 lead going into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Cardinals came out with a defensive push, but
Grant Zick put away his first goal of the season with an assist from Ford at 11:47. The remainder of the second quarter consisted of a hard-fought duel for both teams, but
Andrew Searing broke the silence with 56 second left in the quarter with a Coleman assist to take a 7-1 lead at half.
Scoring in the third quarter began how it ended in the second. At 14:04, Searing put away another goal off a pass from Coleman. Catholic then netted a goal at 9:15 to make it an 8-2 match up. At 8:04, Coleman put away his second goal of the game with a ball from Ford, as
Josh Brannan notched a hat trick at 6:25 off another Ford assist. The Mustangs ended the third quarter leading 10-2.
In the fourth quarter, Ford opened scoring with a man-up goal at 12:49 off a pass from Coleman. Less than a minute later, Ford slotted a hat trick with an assist from Zick to make it a 12-2 contest. At 5:46,
Justin Tepper got on the board with an unassisted man-down goal as his first collegiate goal. The Cardinals put away one more goal at 5:18, but
Jack McKenna put the last goal away at 4:16 for the Mustangs to finalize the 14-3 victory.
Ryan Quinn led the Mustangs on defense, leading the squad with six ground balls and five caused turnovers. On attack, Ford slotted himself a seven-point game, while Coleman followed with five points.
Justin Scorese stood in cage for Stevenson and made 17 saves in the contest, recording a solid game save percentage of .850 on the evening.
The Mustangs will prepare to host No. 3 Gettysburg on Saturday evening in Mustang Stadium. The start of the matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.
