REISTERSTOWN, Md. – Four members of the women's ice hockey squad slotted goals to lead Stevenson (8-10-1, 6-8-1 UCHC, 3-4-1 MAC) to a 5-4 overtime win over Chatham (9-12-1, 8-8-1 UCHC) on Friday afternoon.
The Mustangs came out hot in the first period as
Hannah Labbe opened scoring at 6:06 off a puck from
Meghan Croyle. At 10:21,
Karly Aguirre put away her first goal of the contest with assists from Croyle and
Ashlyn Bray to take a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
In the second, Chatham came out and put their first point of the contest with a power play goal at 3:20. About a minute later, the Cougars tied the game 2-2 with a short-handed goal. At 9:03,
Emily Brightbill put Stevenson back in the lead with assists from
Kendall Girnt and Tea and Ferrara. The Cougars then responded at 11:30 with a power play goal to tie the game 3-3 going into the third period.
The Cougars came out strong in the third period and netted a goal at 4:39 to take a 4-3 lead over the Mustangs, but
Megan Swick put away a power play goal at 12:51 to tie the game 4-4. Despite offensive efforts from both teams, the game went into overtime.
In overtime,
Karly Aguirre put away the game-winning goal past Chatham's netminder on a 3-on-2 power play at 2:28 and gave Stevenson the 5-4 victory.
Olivia DeGuire stood in goal for the Mustangs on the afternoon, making 32 saves.
The Mustangs will remain home at Reisterstown Sportsplex to host the Chatham University Cougars in the second game of the weekend series on Saturday. Puck drop is slotted for 3
