OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson men's lacrosse team fell to the No. 3 Chirstopher Newport Captains 11-19 on Saturday evening in Mustang Stadium.
Shane Ford led the squad on attack with a four-point contest.
Both teams came out to duel as the majority of the first quarter was a back-and-forth battle.
Andrew Searing put the first goal away for Stevenson (0-2) with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter off a pass from
Jack Scaliti. The Captains responded with four goals, but
Ryan Coleman put an unassisted goal away with three seconds remaining to make it a 4-2 game.
In the second quarter, Christopher Newport opened scoring at 13:45 and followed with two more goals to take a 7-2 lead over the Mustangs. At 10:14
Griffin Gast netted a goal off a ball from Ford. The Captains responded with another goal at 10:06 to make it a 8-3 game. Searing put away his second goal of the contest away at 8:41 as Coleman put another away at 7:49 to make it a 8-5 game. CNU fought back, netting two more goals, as Ford hit a goal at the half-time horn to make it a 10-6 contest.
Christopher Newport opened scoring in the second half with a goal at 11:39 in the third quarter. At 10:22 Ford netted a goal for Stevenson with an assist from Scaliti, and Scaliti followed at the nine-minute mark with an unassisted goal to make it an 11-8 game. Ford then notched a hat trick at 5:28 with an unassisted goal at 5:28. The Captains followed with two more goals to grow their lead to 13-9. At 2:11, Gast put away his second goal of the match up, and CNU followed with another goal to take the 14-10 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, CNU put away five goals to cap off the 19-11 win over Stevenson, as
Josh Brannan put the lone goal of the quarter away for the Mustangs at 11:25 with an assist from
Justin Tepper.
Justin Scorese stood in cage for the Mustangs and made 13 saves on the evening. Haplin picked up seven ground balls, as Gast followed with three.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Wednesday in Mustang Stadium as the team hosts Catholic University. First faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
