COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Stevenson men's lacrosse team (0-1) fell in a tight 14-11 decision to the Ursinus Bears on Saturday afternoon.
Ursinus initiated scoring on the afternoon putting the first two points on the board at 11:50 and 10:44. The Mustangs responded at the nine-minute mark with an unassisted goal from
Dillion Linhardt. At 7:44,
Cam Leydig notched his first goal of the day off a pass from
Jack Scaliti to tie the game 2-2. The Bears retaliated and put two more goals away in the seventh minute of the contest to take a 4-2 lead. Leydig then cut the lead to one going into the second quarter with a goal at 2:16.
In the second quarter, the Bears quickly put a goal away 22 seconds into the quarter to jump into a 5-3 lead. The Mustangs fought hard through a back-and-forth battle until
Shaun Padden netted a goal at 9:05 with an assist from
Ed Masterson. Less than a minute later, Leydig grabbed his third goal of the game off an assist from
Ryan Coleman to tie the game 5-5. At 5:37, Ursinus responded with a goal to take a one goal differential, but Leydig responded again at 2:21 with another Coleman assist to tie the game 6-6 going into the third.
Ursinus opened scoring for the third period in a row with goals at 11:17 and 10:29 to notch an 8-6 lead. Leydig then netted two unassisted goals at 10:08 ad 5:56 to tie the match 8-8. At 4:05, Scaliti put away his first unassisted goal of the contest, but the Bears responded 25 second later to tie the match 9-9 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs notched the first point of the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal from John Brannan at 12:45. Ursinus then responded with two more goals to slot a 11-10 lead. At 6:42, Scaliti slotted another unassisted goal to tie the game 11-11. The Bears then held the Mustangs scoreless for the remainder of the match, while netting three more goals to finalize the 14-11 decision.
Justin Scorese stood in cage for the Mustangs and made 12 saves on the afternoon.
The Mustangs will prepare for their home opener against the Captains of Christopher Newport on Saturday, Feb. 25. First face-off is slated for 12 p.m. in Mustang Stadium.
