LANCASTER, Pa. – The Stevenson men's volleyball team (2-5 overall) battled to a five-set decision but ultimately fell 2-3 to Lancaster Bible (5-3 overall) Wednesday evening at Horst Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-21, 23-25, 20-25, 25-23, 8-15.
Stevenson) used a four-point run to take an early 9-7 advantage in the first set which included and ace from
Minh Christensen and capped off by a block from
Elliot De La Torre and
Brian Farrell.
Ryan Thenell added a kill to move the lead to 13-11 before the sides went point-for-point to the 17-15 mark. The Chargers knotted the set at 17 a-piece before De La Torre sparked a 4-1 run for the Mustangs to open a 22-19 lead. The Chargers narrowed the gap to 22-21 but the Mustangs riffled off the final three points to take the opening set 25-21.
The Chargers responded in the second set, hauling to an 8-14 lead before Stevenson could string back-to-back points together capped by a kill from
Aidan O'Brien.
Minh Christensen sent home another ace to narrow the lead to 13-16 but the Chargers extended their lead to 13-19 following a three-point run. The Mustangs used a 9-1 run, which included two aces from
Doug Hines and a kill from
Jack Braverman, to take a 22-20 advantage. Braverman added another kill to square the set at 23 a-piece but the Chargers took the final two points to win the set 23-25.
The Chargers sprinted to a 12-9 lead in the third set before Stevenson squared the set at 12 a-piece on a three-point run with kills from Thenell and O'Brien and an ace from De La Torre. A 7-3 run from Lancaster Bible set the pace at 15-19 before Stevenson returned the favor with a 5-3 run to narrow the gap to 20-22. Lancaster Bible finished the set on a three-point run to take the third frame 20-25.
In the fourth set Lancaster Bible opened a 9-14 before Stevenson used a 4-1 streak to tie the set at 15 a-piece. The Chargers regained their lead at 16-20 using a 5-1 run to get there. However, the Mustangs responded with a 5-0 run to take a 21-20 lead with an ace from Christensen, a block from Hines and De La Torre and another kill from De La Torre. The sides traded points to a 23-23 tie before Stevenson strung together two points to take the set 25-23 and tie the match a two victories a-piece.
The fifth set saw four tie scores and three lead changes as the trend of tightly contested sets continued. The set was tied at 6-6 before the Chargers used a six-point run to open a 6-12 lead. Stevenson chipped away but were unable to overtake the lead, dropping the final set 8-15.
