OSWEGO, N.Y. - Stevenson Men's Hockey faced Concordia University Wisconsin this afternoon in the Oswego State Hockey Classic championship after defeating SUNY Cortland 7-4 last night. The Mustangs would keep the win streak alive by claiming this year's Oswego State Classic title in a convincing 5-1 triumph over the Falcons.
Five different Mustangs contributed to today's offense starting early in the first period with senior Evan Beers, citing assists from classmate Zach Egber and junior Graeme McCrory. Senior Zach Bannister followed just four minutes later with help from Beers as well as sophomore Blake Benson.
Benson would return to the scoresheet in the second period after Concordia's lone goal. Bannister logged an assist on the goal, as would first year Rhett Evjen. Sophomore blue liner Aidan McDowell found the back of the net just minutes after Benson, getting help from classmate Connor MacDonell in the process. Sophomore John Musella would round out a massive five-point tournament with his late second period goal, returning with wing pair Matt Yeager and Brendan Rylott to the stat line.
After today, Benson is tied with junior Liam McCanney for a team-best 13 points and is the sole assist leader with eight. Musella's goal gives him a team-second eight on the season for 12 points, and Bannister follows with 11.
The Mustangs outshot the Falcons 47 to 28, led by Benson with six shots and both MacDonell and classmate Jack Karlsson with five apiece. In the circle, senior Eric Olson won a season-best 17 draws.
In the cage, junior Ty Outen added another 27 stops, including 17 in the second period alone, for his ninth win of the season.
Today's title match puts the Mustangs at 10-3-1 overall, riding a five-game win streak with 25 goals for in that span. Stevenson is back next Sunday, January 7th at 4 p.m. to round out their UCHC and MAC series with King's College at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
