OSWEGO, N.Y. - Stevenson Men's Hockey returned from winter break with a 7-4 win this evening over SUNY Cortland. The victory is the Mustangs' fourth straight and puts them in contention for the 2023 Oswego State Hockey Classic title tomorrow at 1Â p.m.
Sophomore John Musella went on an offensive tear beginning just two minutes into the game. He was assisted on his first goal of the night by senior Brendan Rylott and junior Nick Dineen. Musella was on the board again after three minutes, this time with first year Matt Yeager and Rylott once more.
Cortland bounced back for three straight goals to take a quick lead, but the Mustangs would outdo them for five consecutive goals throughout the second and third periods.Â
Rylott notched his third point of the night on the Mustangs' first goal of the second period, giving Yeager his second assist and Musella his first. Sophomore Blake Benson scored Stevenson's fourth goal, citing help from junior Malcolm Palmer. Musella completed his hat trick to round out the second period via the Yeager-Rylott duo for the second time.
To begin the third, junior Liam McCanney inked his name on the scoresheet alongside senior Zach Egber. The goal was McCanney's ninth of the season while Egber's assist was his fourth. The Mustangs' seventh and final goal was scored by Dineen for his second point of the night in an unassisted effort.
Musella and Rylott tied for a game-best four points on the evening, while Yeager and Dineen trailed with three and two, respectively.Â
In net, junior Ty Outen recorded 36 saves in his eighth win, putting him at an even 400 on the season thus far.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 9-3-1 overall. They will square off with Concordia-Wisconsin tomorrow afternoon in the tournament's title game.
