UTICA, N.Y. - Stevenson Men's Hockey rounded out their UCHC-opening series with Utica this afternoon on the road. After last night's 2-2 tie and 1-0 shootout win, Utica would bounce back to claim the regulation win.
Senior Evan Beers was credited with the first goal of the game for the Mustangs in the second period. The blueliner capitalized on a pass from sophomore Blake Benson to score on the Pioneers' power-play. The goal was Beers' first of the season while the assist was Benson's first point as a Mustang.
On that same power play, however, the Pioneers would capitalize with just six seconds remaining in their man advantage.
The Mustangs would pull ahead yet again less than a minute later as Benson and senior Frank Vitucci got the puck to sophomore Aidan McDowell for his first goal of the season. McDowell's goal ties him for first in points on the team with four.
A final second period goal on the Utica power play would knot the game at two before the hosts secured three more goals in the third.
Beers, McDowell, and junior Liam McCanney accounted for three shots each out of the Mustangs' 28. Senior Eric Olson won a team-high 11 draws in the circle. Beers, Benson, and McCanney finished the game with a team-best +1 rating.
In net, junior Ty Outen made 37 saves, including 16 in the second period. He boasts 137 saves in three games for the Mustangs with a .951 save percentage.
The Mustangs host Alvernia next Friday, November 10th, at 7 PM for their home opener before traveling to Reading, Pennsylvania on Saturday to complete the conference series.
