UTICA, N.Y. - Stevenson Men's Hockey faced Utica University in tonight's UCHC opener. Though regulation would end in a two-goal stalemate, senior Frank Vitucci would complete the upset over No. 3 Utica in the fourth round of the shootout.
The game's scoring started early in the first as the hosting Pioneers found the back of the net three minutes and 47 seconds into regulation. The Mustangs, however, would even the score just 13 seconds later, thanks to senior Zach Egber via junior Nick Dineen. The goal and assist were Egber and Dineen's first points of the season.
Utica would pull ahead with seconds to spare in the first. Junior Liam McCanney would rid the Pioneers of their lead once again seven minutes into the second with juniors Malcolm Palmer and Aidan Graham both earning assists in the effort. McCanney's goal is his second of the season, while Palmer upped his assist total to four and Graham notched his first point of the season.
In net, junior Ty Outen stopped ten shots in each of the first two periods before shutting down 15 Pioneer attempts in the third.
Outen was flawless in all four rounds of the shootout, leaving room for senior Frank Vitucci to net the game-ending goal in front of Utica's 2,790 attendees.
The Mustangs, now 2-0-1 on the season, remain in Utica to battle it out with the Pioneers again tomorrow at 2 PM.
