Mustangs Fall to Elizabethtown in Home Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson men's volleyball team (2-3) dropped a thrilling match to Elizabethtown (3-1) by a score of 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gym. Set scores were 21-25, 26-24, 25-19, 26-24.
 
The Mustangs gained an early 4-2 advantage before the sides went point-for-point to the 11-9 mark. The Blue Jays hauled to an 11-17 lead with an eight-point run. Stevenson chipped away at the margin with a 5-1 capped with a block from Justin Novoa and Aidan O'Brien. Elizabethtown extended closed the opening set with an 8-5 run to take the frame 21-25.
 
Stevenson gained a slight margin in the early stages of the second set before the sides traded points to the 11-10 mark. The Mustangs pushed their lead to 13-10 with back to back kills from Ryan Thenell and Aidan O'Brien but the Blue Jays tied the frame at 14-all following a three-point run. A 6-3 Stevenson run moved the frame to 20-17 with a block from Brian Farrell and Elliot De La Torre and two more kills from Thenell. Stevenson continued to lead to the 23-18 mark but a 8-1 surge from the Blue Jays swung the set to E-town for a 26-24 victory.
 
In the third set, the Mustangs opened a 14-10 lead with a block from O'Brien followed by a kill from Ryan Thenell. The Blue Jays used a 5-1 run to narrow the margin to 17-16 before the Mustangs used a five-point run to open a 22-16 lead with two kills from Farrell and one each from O'Brien and De La Torre. Stevenson sealed the set with a three-point run capped off by a block from Farrell and De La Torre to win the set 25-19.
 
The match remained tightly contested in the fourth set before Stevenson could gain separation with a four-point run which included two kills from Jack Braverman to a 16-13 lead. The Blue Jays chipped away at the lead, closing the gap to 20-18 before Stevenson could regain its ground with a 4-1 run and a 24-19 lead. Elizabethtown surged with a 7-0 run to close the set at 26-24.
