Mustangs Get First Conference Win of Season in 4-3 Defeat of Eastern

Owings Mills, Md. – Stevenson's field hockey team won a close overtime match 4-3 as they returned to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play against Eastern University. The Mustangs improve to 5-5 overall with the win (1-1 in conference) and the Eagles fall to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in conference with the loss.
 
The Mustangs had a large edge in penalty corners with five in the second quarter, with a total of 13 to the Eagles' four. The Mustangs earned the lone penalty stroke of the match, as junior attack Emma Gladstein sent one past the Eagles' junior goalie Abby Agapito, earning Stevenson their first conference win of the season.
 
The first quarter saw the Eagles quickly notching their first goal, with junior midfielder Ellie Pruitt hitting the back of the box in just under four minutes in. Seeing an opportunity after several defensive holds, junior forward Macy Kosanovich took a shot in the tenth minute, but could not get past Agapito. The Mustangs earned their first of 13 penalty corners on the match in the 10th minute, resulting in  Gladstein's first attempt against the Eagles. The first equalizer emered when  Gladstein found the back of the box in the 11th minute, bringing the score to 1-1.
 
In the 14th minute, the Eagles answered with an attempt by Sydney Davis that did not get past the Mustangs' senior goalkeeper Jamie Fritz. The Eagles earned a penalty corner opportunity seconds later, which gave them a goal in the 15th minute by first year forward/ midfielder Morgan Unruh after a five-pass combination.
 
The second quarter opened just as quickly as the first, with the Eagles' Pruitt seeing the back of the box just over two minutes in. The Mustangs earned a penalty corner opportunity seconds later, as sophomore attack Alexa DeFeo had a chance to stick a shot but was denied. Gladstein earned another penalty corner that created an opportunity for sophomore midfielder Rylee Leakway who missed just above the box. Following a penalty corner, a chance opened for Leakway in the 27th minute not seeing past Agapito. The Mustangs pushed offensively to see another penalty corner in the 29th minute. Junior forward Macy Kosanovich would take a chance to see the back of the box ten seconds later. Junior midfielder Veronica Maring stuck a shot to the Eagles in the 30th minute, also being denied by the Eagle defender. With a final corner in the second quarter, the Mustangs scored again seconds before the end, with a shot by junior midfielder Meghan Huey with an assist from Leakway.
 
The Mustangs were ready offensively in the third quarter. Following a green card on the Eagles, Gladstein equalized the match once again in the 39th minute, as the ball bounced off Agapito's pads. The Eagles' Unruh made an unsuccessful attempt just before end of the quarter, which Fritz saved.
 
Both teams remained defensively focused in the final quarter of regulation, neither side allowing the other a goal.
 
In overtime, the Eagles saw an opportunity 42 seconds in, but the shot did not make it past Fritz. The Mustangs got a penalty corner opportunity about two minutes later, with a Gladstein attempt that did not get past Agapito. Leakway tried a shot in the third minute of the extra period, setting up a penalty stroke in which Gladstein was able to score the fourth and final goal of the match.
