CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Mustangs lost to DeSales University 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon. As both teams looked to strengthen their record, the Mustangs fell to 5-6 and the Bulldogs improved to 8-2.
Despite four penalty corners in the last two seconds of the first half, the Mustangs' senior goalkeeper
Jamie Fritz denied all attempts, maintaining a 1-1 tie at the midpoint.
At about 30 seconds into the match, the Bulldogs earned themselves the first of what would be 19 penalty corners. The Mustangs answered with an attempt by junior attack
Emma Gladstein in the fourth minute, though junior goalkeeper Kayla Yeatman stopped the shot . A highly motivated DeSales offense notched an early game score, putting one in with 1:41 left in the first quarter off the stick of senior forward Tyra Wingle.
The Mustangs gained an offensive opportunity in the second quarter off a penalty corner about a minute and a half in. Sophomore defense
Haley Palmer sticked an attempt off target 13 seconds later. Mindful of the DeSales offense, the Mustangs' defense gained possession off a penalty corner attempt in the 21
st minute. With 3:12 left in the second half, Palmer made a quick pass to sophomore midfielder
Rylee Leakway, with a shot that could not find the back of the box. Gladstein saw an additional opportunity with just under two minutes left in the half, a shot that Yeatman warded off. On a penalty stroke created shortly after that, Gladstein equalized the match, making the score 1-1. The Bulldogs answered with four penalty corners in the last two seconds of the half, all of which were saved by Fritz.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with an early penalty corner, resulting in an off-target attempt from first year forward/midfielder Jordyne Stong. After a five minutes of hotly contested play, the Mustangs earned their third penalty corner, creating an attempt for junior forward
Macy Kosanovich, who also went on to make a second attempt moments later, to no avail. . Following another Stevenson shot attempt, DeSales' offense answered with an shot just over a minute later from senior forward Caroline McGrath, not getting past Fritz. The Bulldogs earned two more penalty corners with under three minutes left in the third. The Mustangs blocked a shot by Bulldog senior midfielder Sarah Peterson. Senior SU midfielder Catie McGrath could not find the back of the box as sophomore midfielder
Logan Beaty pushed for a defensive save.
The Bulldogs opened the final quarter with two penalty corners. The Bulldogs broke the tie about five minutes in off the 13
th penalty corner for the Bulldogs, when Stong found the back of the box, making the score 2-1. The Mustangs answered seconds later, notching three shots off a penalty corner with a fourth seeing the back of the box off the stick of Gladstein from junior midfielder
Meghan Huey, equalizing the match again, 2-2. Fritz earned her fifth save of the match after an attempt from Peterson off a penalty corner with less than five minutes left. With multiple corners by the Bulldogs as the quarter progressed, the last made with 29 seconds left in the final quarter. Neither team was able to break the equalizer. Kosanovich's shot with less than two minutes on the clock was blocked by the Bulldogs.
DeSales opened overtime with a corner just under a minute in. Several attempts from the Bulldogs fell short, saved by Fritz. The Mustangs made a pair of attempts before a penalty corner, also falling short. DeSales broke the tie off a penalty stroke, bringing the final score to 3-2.
