Mustangs Earn 2-1 Victory in Non-Conference Road Win at Immaculata

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson field hockey team earned another victory in a non-conference match against Immaculata University on Wednesday afternoon. The Mustangs improve to 4-5 (0-1 in conference), while the Mighty Macs fall to 3-6.

While the first half of the match was scoreless, junior forward Macy Kosanovich scored for the Mustangs in the fourth quarter, hitting the back of the box in the 56th minute of the match.

The first quarter saw several offensive pushes from the Mighty Macs. Freshman forward Gabrielle O'Brien made an attempt in the second minute, although the Mustangs saw an opportunity to block the initial push.  The Mighty Macs earned another attempt off a penalty corner in the sixth minute by junior midfield/forward Lauren Vandenbraak. Senior Mustang goalkeeper Jamie Fritz swept the attempt, earning a save. The quarter rounded out with a familiar pairing as Vandenbraak made another attempt and Fritz worked to save the offensive push from the Mighty Macs.

The second quarter opened immediately with an off-target offensive push from Stevenson junior attack Emma Gladstein. Just over a minute later, the Mustangs forced an attempt off a penalty corner by junior defense Aly Yates, but the shot did not get past sophomore goalkeeper Julia Levase. The Mustangs answered defensively in the 18th minute with Fritz saving two attempts, one from Vandenbraak and another from senior midfield/forward Gianna Gatto. The Mustangs earned another penalty corner in the 23rd minute, but the game remained a back-and-forth affair as the half ended.

The Mustangs mounted several offensive drives in the third quarter. Freshman midfielder Brenna Benson created an attempt in the 38th minute followed by another from sophomore defense Paige Wilson off a penalty corner in the 39th minute, though neither got past Levase. The Mustangs found opportunity in setting up for penalty corners, with the first two occurring within seven seconds of each other. The second two corners took place in the 44th minute following a Gladstein attempt in the 40th minute. Freshman defense  Ariana Hughart notched an offensive push between the corners, missing wide.

The last quarter opened as the Mustangs got on the board just over a minute from the start. Sophomore defense Haley Palmer saw the back of the box, scoring the initial goal for the Mustangs. Kosanovich had an attempt in the 53rd minute, but could not see past Levase. Less than 30 seconds later, the Mighty Macs scored in the 54th minute off the stick of Vandenbraak with help from Gatto. The Mustangs knew how to set themselves up offensively, and broke the tie in the 56th minute, thanks to Kosanovich.
