ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Stevenson women's volleyball team (13-1, 2-0 MACC) defeated Dickinson (6-4, 1-0 Centennial) in straight sets before downing Muhlenberg (7-6, 0-1 Centennial) by a score of 3-1 during a tri-match Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
Match 1 vs Dickinson (25-22, 25-14, 25-18)
Stevenson first year
Giulia Viglietta put down a career-best 11 kills with a .500 attack percentage to lead the court in scoring.
Haley Hoover added 10 kills in the effort with
Kayla Vaeth and
Makala Thompson each recording two aces.
The Mustangs and Red Devils battled throughout the first set. Dickinson gained a 15-18 lead with a four-point run capped with a block. Stevenson continued to chip away at the advantage, eventually overtaking the lead with a four-point rally with kills from
Shannon Baily and
Giulia Viglietta for a 24-20 lead.
Haley Hoover put down the final kill to take the set 25-22.
The Mustangs fell behind early in the second set but regained the lead with a 6-1 run and never relinquished the advantage. A fou-point rally capped by a kill from Viglietta moved the Mustang lead to 13-7. Viglietta and
Sarah Straub paired up for block to add to the Mustang lead at 15-8. Stevenson finished the set on a 10-4 tear and polished off the frame with a three-point rally on kills from Baily, Viglietta and Hoover, taking the set 25-14.
The third set began tightly contested with the sides battling through seven tie scores and five lead changes but a three-point run peaked by an ace from
Samantha Simmers gave Stevenson the 16-14 edge and that would be all it needed.
Rileigh Kimball put down a kill to spark a 6-0 run that finished the set. Viglietta added two more kills in the run while
Kylie DesLauriers added one kill as the Mustangs took the final frame 25-18.
Match 2 vs Muhlenberg (25-16, 25-22, 20-25, 25-15)
The Mustangs held Muhlenberg to a .000 hit percentage in the match while
Shannon Baily put down nine kills to lead the team in the four-set affair.
Kayla Vaeth totaled 19 digs while
Makala Thompson dished out 22 assists for the visiting Mustangs.
Stevenson carried its momentum to the second match, racing to a 12-4 lead over the Mules on the heels of back-to-back kills from
Giulia Viglietta and
Shannon Baily. Muhlenberg narrowed the advantage to 17-11 before Stevenson finished the frame on a 8-5 run to take the first set 25-16.
The second stanza saw nine tie scores and three lead changes at the Mustangs and Mules hit for .053 and .049 respectively. The Mustangs pressed on with a five-point rally sparked by a
Shannon Baily kill and capped with back-to-back aces from
Samantha Simmers for a 19-15 lead. That would be all the separation the Mustangs would need as they took the set 25-22 on a killy from
Molly Joyner.
Muhlenberg surged in the third set as the Mustangs hit for a .000 average. The Mules used a four-point run to take a 11-14 lead. Stevenson responded, tying the frame at 17 a-piece with three-point run capped on a kill from
Rileigh Kimball. However, the Mules put the set out of reach with a 3-7 run to finish the frame at 20-25.
Stevenson applied the pressure to Muhlenberg in the fourth set, hitting for a match-best .294 and holding the Mules to -.079. The sides continued to battle with nine tie scores and six lead changes in the frame. A Mustang attack error put Muhlenberg within reach at the 14-13 mark but Stevenson would rip a seven-point run to assert a 21-13 advantage with two kills from DesLauriers and one each from Hoover and
Adriana Anderson.
Haley Hoover put down a block to cap a three-point run to finish the set at 25-15.
