CHESTER, Pa. – The Stevenson football team scored 20 unanswered points to overcome a 10-14 deficit at the half to seal a 30-14 victory at Widener to remain perfect on the season Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
Stevenson (4-0, 2-0 MAC) remains unbeaten following a third straight outing without allowing a second half score. Widener (1-3, 0-2 MAC) drops its second-straight contest. Senior
Ryan Sedgwick posted 221 passing yards with two rushing touchdowns and another in the air in the victory, becoming the program's all-time leading passer.
How it Happened
- Both teams' first drives resulted in punts before the Pride put together a 10-play 57-yard drive resulting in a Jeff Chaplin seven-yard pass to Cameron Hooper for the game's first score.
- The following Mustangs drive began with a 46-yard run from Brandon Walker before the 10-play, 66-yard drive stalled out. Brody Campbell booted a 20-yard field goal to narrow the gap to 3-7.
- Following a turnover on downs on the ensuing Pride drive, Stevenson marched 79 yards to the endzone capped off by a six yard run from Ryan Sedgwick to take a 10-7 lead.
- The Pride took a 14-10 lead on a Jeff Chaplin's second passing touchdown of the afternoon finding Matt Kain, Jr. in the end zone for a seven-yard score, rounding out the scoring in the first half.
- The Mustangs jump started second half scoring with a 10-play drive capped with a Steven Smothers 12-yard touchdown catch from Sedgwick to take a 17-14 lead. Tyler Blake and Sedgwick connected for a 20-yard play to put the Mustangs in the red zone.
- The Stevenson defense stood tall, another punt to get the ball back to the offense. The Mustangs marched 68-yards on 13 plays for their second score of the half with Sedgwick finding the endzone on a one yard rush to put the Mustangs up 23-14.
- Following a three-and-out from the Pride, Stevenson put together a 13-play 68-yard drive capped with Maurice Hammond five-yard touchdown run to take a 30-14 advantage with 5:15 remaining in the game.
- The strong Stevenson defense continued to hold the Pride scoreless, forcing a turnover on downs in the ensuing drive.
- With the Pride driving in the late minutes of the fourth quarter, Corey Jones-Pentz intercepted a Jeff Chaplin pass with 11 seconds remaining in the game to seal the 30-14 victory.
Numbers and Notes
- Stevenson held the Pride scoreless in the second half, the third consecutive game they have done so. The Mustangs have now outscored their opponents 66-14 in the second half this season.
- Maurice Hammond racked up 67 yards rushing and 13 receiving with one rushing touchdown to lead the ground attack.
- Ryan Sedgwick scored two rushing touchdowns on the day, tacking on one more through the air. He added 221 passing yards going 20-31.
- Stevens Smothers totaled 8 catches for 90 yards and a score and now has scored in each game this season.
- Tom Zatalava and JanMichael Finch each tallied nine tackles for the Mustangs with Finch adding two sacks for a loss of eight yards.
- Corey Jones-Pentz sealed the victory with his first-career interception.
- Stevenson enjoys a 4-0 start for the first time since 2016 where they went 9-2 and made the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance.
