FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Stevenson women's volleyball (10-1, 2-0 MACC) defeated Lynchburg (5-5, 1-0 ODAC) by a score of 3-1 and William Peace (10-3, 0-0 USA South) in a 3-0 straight-set sweep. The Mustangs topped Lynchburg with set scores of 25-27, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-20. Set scores against William Peace were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-18.
Match 1 vs Lynchburg
The Mustangs took a 13-6 advantage in the first set, leveraging a six-point streak which included kills from
Giulia Viglietta and
Shannon Baily and a block from
Haley Hoover. Baily also added an ace in the stretch.
Rileigh Kimball added an ace to move the Mustang lead to 18-13 before
Molly Joyner added a kill to stretch the lead to 19-13.
A five-point Hornets rally gave Lynchburg the narrow 21-20 lead in the late stages of the set. The sides endured five tie scores and two lead changes for the remainder of the set, with Lynchburg taking the final advantage and winning the frame 25-27.
Stevenson began the second set with an early advantage, taking a 11-8 lead with a five-point streak which included two kills from
Rileigh Kimball and another from
Shannon Baily. The Mustangs added another three-point run capped by an ace from
Samantha Simmers to take a 17-12 lead. The Hornets narrows the Stevenson advantage to 22-19 with a 6-2 run.
Rileigh Kimball broke the Lynchburg momentum with a kill and an ace to stretch the lead to the 24-19 mark. Baily added the final tally to give Stevenson the 25-20 victory to tie the match at one set a-piece.
The third set began tightly contest, with the sides enduring four tie scores but only one lead change. Stevenson earned an 11-8 lead on a three-point run with a kill from Kimball and a block from Sarah Staub and never relinquished the lead. A six-point run which saw kills from Baily, and two each from Straub and
Kylie DesLauriers gave Stevenson a 19-11 lead.
The Hornets made a final push, stringing four points together to narrow the Mustang lead to 23-16. However, the Stevenson lead was too much to overcome and the Mustangs took the third stanza with a score of 25-17.
Stevenson lead the fourth set wire-to-wire, leveraging an 11-5 lead with a four-point run which saw a kill and an ace from Baily and a kill from Kimball. The Hornets used a 5-1 run to narrow the margin to 15-13 but Stevenson responded with a 5-1 run of their own for a 20-14 lead, capped by back-to-back kills from
Shannon Baily.
Lynchburg gave one final push with a 5-2 run to the 22-19 mark, but Stevenson took three of the final four points to earn the match sealing set at 25-20.
Haley Hoover gave the Mustangs the final point with a block.
Match 2 vs William Peace
Stevenson fell to an early deficit in the first set before a four point run gave the Mustangs the lead at the 9-7 mark. The sides trade points to the 15-14 mark before the Pacers put down a pair of kills for a 15-16 advantage. Stevenson riffled off the next seven points for a 22-16 advantage.
Haley Hoover notched two aces during the run while
Rileigh Kimball and
Molly Joyner each added kills. The sides matched points for the remainder of the frame with
Sarah Straub putting down the final kill to give Stevenson the 25-19 victory.
The teams battled through four tie scores and two lead changes to start the second set before the Mustangs could crack open a 14-8 lead with a five point rally. Hoover added another ace in the run while Kimball and Staub each added kills. The Mustangs finished the frame with 3-2 run with kills from DesLauriers and Kimball to take the set at 25-18.
Stevenson carried its momentum to the third set and never trailed in the frame. The Mustangs carried a lead to the 14-8 mark before the Pacers could stall the momentum momentarily. Stevenson added a three-point string with kills from
Molly Joyner and
Haley Hoover and an ace from
Kayla Vaeth to take an 18-11 lead. The Mustangs finished the set with a 6-2 run with
Rileigh Kimball adding four kills during the stretch to take the set at 25-18.
