OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's volleyball team (8-0, 2-0 MACC) remain perfect with a straight-set sweep of Alvernia (4-3, 1-1 MACC) in MAC Commonwealth action Tuesday night at Owings Mills gymnasium. Set scores were 25-13, 25-19 and 25-17.
The first set began tightly contested, with six ties and three lead changes. The sides traded runs to the 10-10 mark before Stevenson ripped a 13-0 streak. During the run,
Sarah Straub deposited four kills while
Molly Joyner notched three. Straub and
Rileigh Kimball also combined for a block during the stretch. The sides traded points to round out the set with
Haley Hoover earning the final tally to give the Mustangs the 25-13 opening frame victory.
The second frame was again tightly contested seeing four ties and three lead changes. Stevenson jumped to a 10-7 lead on the heels of a three-point run which saw a kill from
Giulia Viglietta and a block from
Sarah Straub. Stevenson stretched its lead to 15-12 before Alvernia riffled off a five-point run to overtake the lead at a 15-17 advantage. The Mustangs regained the lead, taking advantage of Golden Wolves attack errors during an eight-point run capped with a block from the duo of Kimball and Hoover. Straub and Viglietta paired up to block the final Alvernia attack, giving the Mustangs the set by a score of 25-19.
In the third set, Stevenson roared to a 14-5 lead before Alvernia could slow the Mustang momentum.
Rileigh Kimball added back-to-back kills during the opening run while
Haley Hoover sent down two aces. An Alvernia service error gave Stevenson a 19-9 lead before the Golden Wolves embarked on a five-point run to narrow the lead to 19-14. The Mustangs responded with a five-point run of their own which saw two kills from
Shannon Baily and two aces from
Samantha Simmers. The sides traded points before
Sarah Kroedel sent home the final kill of the match, giving the Mustangs the third set victory at 25-17.
