Mustangs Tie Season Opener at St Mary’s (Md.)

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Stevenson men's soccer opened the 2022 season with a 1-1 draw against St. Mary's (Md.), Thursday afternoon.

After some back and forth play in the initial 13 minutes, Stevenson made its first substitution with Ryan Muroff entering the contest. Stevenson registered the first shot of the game in the 24th minute, coming off the foot of Tiago Silva, followed by another attempt by Chris GonzalesConnor Mullin and Gianfranco Vitella posted a pair of shot attempts in the 33rd minute. Ryan Muroff ripped the last attempt on goal in the 41st minute, missing high.

Breathing new life into the second half, Stevenson cranked in the effort in the 51st minute with a shot on goal by Jacob Chatten, before being denied by SMC goalkeeper Liam Delone-Bellsey. Following a wave of corner kicks, throw ins and goal kick for both sides, Stevenson broke the scoreless tie in the 78th minute on a marker from Joe Nicholson.

Nicholson carved in before placing a high shot past Delone-Bellsey, pushing the Mustangs in front.

Eight minutes later, St. Mary's netted the equalizer on a tally from Elliot Hodges. Alex Ochman found the open Hodges, who found the top of the cage in the 86th minute.

NUMBERS AND NOTES

  • Stevenson held a 14-10 advantage in shots.
  • Kristian Slaby made his return between the pipes on Thursday afternoon for the Mustangs, stopping a pair of Seahawks chances.
  • The first yellow cards were issued in the second half, with two for the Mustangs and four for the Seahawks
  • Stevenson totaled 12 fouls, while St. Mary's was whistled for eight.
  • Vitella led all players with three shot attempts on the day.
  • The Mustangs showed off their depth in the season opener, sending in 12 substitutes in the regulation tie.
